Ragnar woke Monday morning and felt like not getting up. He could simply lay there, order breakfast in bed, and then take a long shower. But he had only about three more weeks to catch the Qhaway. Yet, something Julie had said the night before resonated through him. What if he just hung out for three more weeks with Julie, pretend to find the killer, the Qhaway, and then simply go back to his home saying he couldn’t find the subject? Did he have the same sense of justice as humans? He wasn’t sure about that. What he did have was his Maskhay’s code. In his language they didn’t have a single word for failure. They had a series of degrading sentences that strung back through historical events that described the act of failure. It was more like a grating lecture. Something he had never experienced personally from the Sinchi, but had heard him unleash on other Maskhays.

Instead of laying in bed, Ragnar got up, showered and dressed, and then went downstairs for breakfast. He got into the FBI Division Headquarters by seven thirty and immediately accessed the system through his laptop while he waited for the others to show up for the morning briefing.

He wasn’t sure what more he could do. Working within the parameters of the FBI, he had run into a brick wall. The Qhaway was good. Too good. If he wanted to turn into even more of a killing machine, there was nothing Ragnar could do to stop him. What if he decided to go after all of those on the sex offender watch list? Or what if he went after others, charged or not charged, who had somehow gotten off for different crimes—like murder or embezzlement. Were the victims of these crimes not equally deserving of justice?

Once they were all gathered in the conference room, Special Agent in Charge James Brooks gave a very somber briefing, not asking many questions. Julie gave an update on their investigation, explaining what they had found out about the bailiff and others. Brooks simply nodded and thanked her when she was done. Fifteen minutes later everyone filed out, leaving Julie and Ragnar behind in the room.

“Don’t you hate that term Think Out of the Box?” Julie asked.

“Yeah, what did your boss, Brooks, mean by that?”

“He’s your boss too.”

“No! I’m on special assignment.”

She shook her head. “I don’t know how we can get more creative. I thought we were thinking out of the box looking into court officials.”

“We haven’t really done a great job looking into religious zealots,” he said.

“You’re right. We should have a list of radicals picked up at protests outside abortion clinics, or some other crazy activity.”

Ragnar turned his computer screen toward her, revealing a long list of those he had found that morning. If he had to make it look good, this was as good a direction as any to take.

“Nice.”

“So, you’re pro abortion?” he asked.

“No! I don’t like abortions, but a woman should have a right to choose.
